    IMPERFECTIVE AND PERFECTIVE VERBS

The verbs in Polish are divided according to their aspect into imperfective and perfective.

The imperfective verbs are used to express:

  •  the duration of the action,
  •  the repetition of the action,
  •  the situation when the action is/was/will be not completed.

The imperfectives form three tenses respectively as simple present, simple past and complex future constructions.

There are usually accompanied by such expressions as: teraz (now), zawsze (always), czasami (sometimes), często (often), zwykle (usually), rzadko (rarely), nigdy (never), od czasu do czasu (from time to time).

The perfective verbs are used to express:

  • the action which was/will be performed once,
  • the actions which was/will be completed.

The perfectives form two tenses, respectively as simple past and simple future constructions.

There are usually accompanied by such expressions as: wreszcie (finally), już (already), nagle (suddenly).
